What is a URL slug?

A slug is the last part of a page's address that identifies it, for example how-to-start-an-online-business in example.com/blog/how-to-start-an-online-business. A good slug tells a reader and a search engine what the page is about before it even loads.

What makes a good slug

  • Short and descriptive. A handful of words that name the topic. Long slugs are harder to read and share, and get cut off in search results.
  • Lowercase. Some servers treat /About and /about as different pages, which creates duplicates. Lowercase avoids that.
  • Hyphens between words. Google recommends hyphens over underscores, because it reads a hyphen as a word separator.
  • Only safe characters. Letters, numbers and hyphens. Spaces, accents, symbols and punctuation either break or get percent-encoded into ugly sequences such as %20.
  • No dates or numbers you'll outgrow. A slug with "2026" in it looks stale next year, and changing it later means setting up a redirect.

Using it with Urdu, Arabic, Hindi and other scripts

Turning Urdu, Arabic, Hindi, Chinese, Japanese or Korean into Latin letters can't be done reliably by a simple rule: the same word can be spelled several ways, and a wrong guess makes a confusing URL. So in "Latin letters only" mode this tool leaves those characters out and tells you how many it dropped, instead of inventing a spelling.

You have two good options. Write the slug in English yourself (many Urdu and Arabic sites do), or choose Keep original letters. Modern browsers show those URLs as written, but when someone copies the link it is percent-encoded and becomes much longer. The checks panel shows you how long.

Bulk mode

Paste a list of titles with one on each line and you get one slug per line, in the same order and with blank lines kept, so the results line up when you paste them back into a spreadsheet. Turn on "Number duplicates" if the same title appears more than once and each needs its own address.

Changing an existing slug

If a page is already live and getting visitors, changing its slug changes its address. Set up a permanent (301) redirect from the old address to the new one, or search engines and anyone with the old link will land on an error page. For a new page, choose the slug before publishing and leave it alone.

Your text stays private

Everything is calculated in your browser. Nothing you type here is uploaded, sent or stored by this page.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a slug be?

There is no hard rule, but under about 60 characters and about six words is a sound aim. The checks panel warns you when a slug goes past that.

Should I remove words like "the" and "and"?

It can shorten a slug without losing meaning, for example the-art-of-the-deal becomes art-deal. It is optional, because removing words can also change the sense, so look at the result before you use it.

Does the slug affect rankings?

A clear slug is a small signal at best. Its main value is that it is readable to people, which helps when the link is shared or shown in results. Focus on the page's content first. Our guides on SEO for beginners and keyword research cover what matters more.

Why is my slug empty?

Either the text contained only symbols, or it was written in a script that can't be converted to Latin letters. In the second case, choose "Keep original letters".
